AI that does real work, inside rules it can't break.
Lumi has two AI systems. The page composer helps staff build pages. Ask helps families find answers. Both are built so the district stays in control of what the public sees.
The AI page composer
An editor describes the page they need, in the same words they'd use with a colleague. The composer, powered by Claude, drafts that page from Lumi's own panes, so the result looks and behaves like every other page on the site.
What happens to every draft
- The editor describes the page in plain language.
- Claude drafts it using only Lumi's panes.
- Lumi validates the draft against the pane schemas and the accessibility rules.
- If anything fails, the problems go back to the model for one corrective retry.
- A draft that passes is ready for the editor to review. A draft that still fails can't be saved.
The composer can also generate imagery for a page, using the alt text it wrote as the prompt, so the description and the picture match from the start.
The rules every draft is checked against
- Required alt text
- Every image needs a description a screen reader can announce.
- Correct heading order
- Headings step down one level at a time, so the page outline makes sense.
- Descriptive link text
- Links say where they go. No bare Click here or Read more.
- Brand colors only
- Colors come from the district palette, never an arbitrary color the model picked.
- Valid panes
- Every pane in the draft matches its schema, so it renders like a hand-built page.
Ask, on every public page
Families can ask a question from any page on the district site and get a direct answer, drawn from the district's own pages. Every answer comes with clickable source citations, so a parent can check the page it came from.
Questions about dates, like when winter break starts or what's on Friday, pull live calendar data instead of relying on whatever a page said last month. Those answers are never stale.
Guardrails
- Answers are grounded in the district's published pages, with sources shown.
- Date questions read the live calendar.
- Ask is rate limited to prevent abuse.
- Questions are logged, so staff can review how Ask is being used.
What families ask
An insights dashboard shows staff the questions families actually ask. When the same question keeps coming up, that's a page worth writing or a link worth moving.
For technical readers
Both systems run in the same Cloudflare Worker as the rest of Lumi. See how Lumi is built for the full architecture.
Composer
- The admin editor sends the editor's request to the Worker, which calls the Anthropic API. The model is asked for a page expressed as Lumi panes, not free-form HTML.
- The response is parsed against the pane schemas, then checked against the accessibility rules: alt text, heading order, link text and the brand palette.
- Validation errors are returned to the model once as a corrective retry. If the second attempt fails, the save is refused, so an inaccessible page never reaches the content store.
Ask
- Retrieval-augmented generation over the district's pages, using Cloudflare AI Search as the index. Answers cite the pages they were built from.
- Date questions are answered from live calendar data, which Lumi syncs from Google Calendar on a schedule.
- Requests are rate limited and logged, and the logs feed the insights dashboard.
